Renovation of a Haussmann-style apartment, Paris 15

Paris 15

As in a Calder sculpture or a Kandinsky painting, we aim to create a precise balance between elements of different shapes, materials, and functions. Careful consideration of the furniture and its layout allows us to make the most of the available space and highlight the Haussmann-style features, such as the parquet flooring, large windows, natural light, moldings, and noble materials.

In collaboration with Iris Séné, and competition phase Anouk André.

The aim of the project is to create a sense of space while preserving the apartment's functionality and flexibility of use. The existing layout lends itself to this stylistic exercise: the partition wall between one of the bedrooms and the living room, which overlooks the street, is not load-bearing and can be removed. This creates a large35mÂČ reception area where the living room, dining room and piano can be arranged. With its generous volume, two tall windows and access to the terrace, this35mÂČ rectangular room is the showcase of a typical Haussmannian apartment.

We therefore believe it is important to organize the apartment into two distinct but permeable areas: on one side, the fluid and reversible shared spaces—entrance, kitchen, and living room—connected around the large35mÂČ volume; and on the other, the private rooms—bathroom and bedroom.

In order to save resources, the decision was also made not to move the original layout or touch the load-bearing walls. The aim is not to change or rebuild, but rather to maximize the quality and livability of the existing space, paying particular attention to the quality of the finishes.

The furniture is designed to accentuate this spaciousness. The pieces of furniture complement each other and create a common thread. They unfold like a ribbon running along the walls. A series of tilts and rotations allows the various functions available in this space to be deployed. It can be simply comfortable and harmonious when almost empty. If necessary, its walls and furniture come to life and transform the space.
